The Greenwich Science Center has developed and implemented cutting edge programs that target the students and educators alike.
Education Support
With the many obstacles facing local public school systems, the Greenwich Science Center has worked diligently to ensure that the educational experience is not compromised due to any lack of equipment and/or funding. Through its Educational Support program the Greenwich Science Center helps the school district to purchase the equipment needed to establish a learning environment that is conducive to the growth and success of the students. Equipment ranges from computers, books, and research supplies that keep the students in a position to enjoy a higher standard of science education.
Scholarship & Research Awards
The Greenwich Science Center's Scholarship & Research Awards program provides financial support to graduating high school seniors and other students who have excelled academically in either science or mathematics. The recipients of these awards are honored at a banquet event annually in June. In its inaugural year the Greenwich Science Center distributed $15,000 in scholarship and research award dollars, in the upcoming years the Greenwich Science Center will look to increase the amounts distributed.
Beyond the Walls
The Greenwich Science Center "Beyond the Walls" program was designed to give students the opportunity to experience science outside of the traditional classroom setting. Through-out the course of the academic year the Greenwich Science Center takes students on trips that are appropriate for their respective ages and grades. Annually the Greenwich Science Center has one major trip that provides students with an experience that they would never experience if it had not been for the efforts of the Greenwich Science Center. In July 2008 the Greenwich Science Center hosted a trip to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where the students were treated to an executive tour of the center and got to meet with NASA astronaut Al Warden.
EduWeb
The Greenwich Science Center has created an innovative program to help students and their parents explore the wonders of science. EduWeb are two web based programs designed to give students a more realistic and hands-on approach to science, the first of these is a program called GIZMOS. The GIZMOS program allows students 24 hour web access to different science topics and experiments. Parents can join in and see what types of projects their children are involved with. The topics for GIZMOS range from physics, biology, geography, and math with many more areas available. Actionlabs is the other program that is available. The Actionlab program combines computer illustrations with practical application. With the internet being a major part of the lives of nearly every family the EduWeb program has been an invaluable asset for students, parents, and educators.
Educator Enhancement
The Greenwich Science Center knows that our efforts would not have any impact if it were not for the dedicated men and women who selflessly give of themselves for the advancement of the students. Iits is because of this that the Greenwich Science Center created the Educator Enhancement program. This program looks to bring in guest speakers from various scientific disciplines to update the educators on the constant advancements that are being made. The Greenwich Science Center is also looking to incorporate continuing education credits into this program area.
